Alcohol and tobacco abuse education is critical for professionals working with maternal and child health populations because they are the most prevalent substance abuse problems encountered in public health practice.

The Substance Abuse Distance Learning Enhancement (SADLE) online CEU program consists of three courses providing comprehensive information about alcohol and tobacco abuse specific to women, infants, children, and adolescents. By increasing knowledge and skills of health professionals, SADLE seeks to contribute to community changes in prevention, early detection, treatment, and referral of substance abuse problems.

These courses are designed for:

Clinicians:
Nurses, midwives, and dietitians working with mothers and children will be able to use information from these courses to improve their diagnosis and treatment options when confronted with tobacco and alcohol abuse in their patients.

Public Health Professionals:
Health educators, program planners, policy makers, and managers of MCH programs will find this program helpful with linking physiological effects of tobacco and alcohol abuse with program planning and outcome measures.

Behavioral Health Professionals:
Psychologists, social workers, and substance abuse counselors will learn about the unique issues of alcohol and tobacco abuse during pregnancy, infancy, childhood, and adolescence.

Academic Credits:
Undergraduate and graduate students may take these courses at scheduled times for academic credit through the department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona.
